Mixing Prints

Tips:

COLLECTIONS: Select a package of designer's series paper that is already color and pattern coordinated for you. It is an easy way to mix and match paper when designing cards.

KEY POINTS:

Select DSP in the same color family but use a straight-line design (lines, plaids, geometrics, diagonals) and two sizes of patterns. Combining plaids, polka dots, and florals is a pleasing mix.

Three patterns are a good number to work with when selecting a combination for a homemade card.

If three patterns seem too busy, enter one in a neutral color of black, beige, brown, gray, vanilla, or white. The Latte with a Friend Card actually has four patterns. The dark brown color is a buffer between the coffee beans and the hearts. In addition, the white sentiment label and Pecan Pie ribbon create another buffer zone.

CASE: My favorite definition is Copy and Slightly Edit, but the acronym is more commonly defined as Copy and Share Everything. Select a card that is pleasing to you and recreate the card using the same or similar paper.

SOCIAL MEDIA: Finding homemade cards on Pinterest or search engines and following the card maker's designs is helpful. Many times, the demonstrator links to a PDF with instructions or provides the recipe on their blog.

RULE OF THREE: As you learn how to mix DSP, consider developing your style and comfort with patterns. Catherine Pooler suggests the "Rule of 3." She suggests taking a card idea and changing at least three aspects of the card that inspired you—the colors, layout, stamps, and techniques—because this process will help you develop your style as you discover card making.

GIVE CREDIT: Remember to give credit to card makers if you CASE or follow their patterns. Check out the designer's blog information about posting cards.
